Town of High River
Lift Station Station No. 1 Upgrades
with McElhanney Consulting Ltd.

Project Team

McElhanney was the Prime Consultant for this project (www.mcelhanney.com).

M2 Engineering supplemented McElhanney’s project team for the pre-design, detailed design and major equipment procurement of the screening and conveyance components of the lift station upgrade project. M2 Engineering was also involved in the conversion of the existing generator room to a screening’s room.

Project Description

The Town of High River’s Lift Station No. 1 collects all the Town’s wastewater and pumps the flow to the lagoons. The lift station was constructed in 1986 and several operations and maintenance issues were experienced, such as:

  • Inability to complete wet well maintenance, as no bypass is available

  • Frequent pump cycling and wet well capacity issues

  • Performance issues with existing comminutors

  • Solids accumulation in the existing wet well and lagoon

  • Various safety and operational issues related to outdated components and new building standards

Our engineering team started working with the Town of High River in 2016 and completed a Lift Station Upgrade Feasibility Study to identify various upgrades required and equipment options available. The major upgrades identified included:

  • Installation of a package low flow bypass lift station

  • Install new mechanical screen and washer compactor

  • Seal wet well/dry well openings

  • Install safety rails and grating

  • Install new outdoor enclosure generator

A major equipment supply contract was developed in 2017 to procure the screening equipment. Construction and commissioning of the upgrades was completed in 2018.

Project Challenges

  • Eliminate solids accumulation in the wet well and lagoon

  • Eliminate safety and maintenance concerns

  • Reduce time required for regular operation and maintenance

  • Re-configuring an existing lift station for new mechanical equipment

  • Upgrading and existing lift station that cannot be out of service for any significant time
